EW1032. Ames Model 1840 heavy cavalry saber in fantastic condition, the blade is full length, it retains it's bright finish but has begun to darken, it has a few tiny nicks in the edge more felt than seen, the ricasso is marked N.P. AMES / CABOTVILLE / 1847, the obverse is marked U S / N W P for inspector Nahaun P. Patch,, the marks are visible but worn, the blade fits tight to the hilt with no wiggle, the hilt is also in great shape with no damage, the leather on the grip is in great shape, the hilt doesn't show any signs but having been taken apart, but the leather looks so good it may have been replaced, has the original wire braid, the guard has a mellow brass patina, the scabbard is equally nice with an even medium brown patina, the small screw in the throat piece is missing, the drag is stamped A.E.I., an exceptionally nice Model 1840 that could have seen both the Mexican and Civil Wars
